Craig Buddon

SPA

This is a crag found in an unlikely location in an otherwise fairly flat area next to a reservoir. It is granite and is clearly used for climbing; but a sign clearly says, 'No Climbing'. As this is painted in large letters in the middle of the rock it's quite clear that any access issues would need to be sorted out with landowners if you wan to go there.

As a crag it is ideal - there are plentiful huge belays at the top from boulders and trees, and it is a good size (perhaps 40' high). However, it does look as if there are not too many easy routes for beginners, though there should be enough. A good spot for abseiling too.

Beacon Hill Crags

SPA

Beacon Hill, Leicestershire

This country park has a few small crags scattered on a hill top. SPA required; belays look plentiful but aren't as easy as at first glance. Take care! The rock can be very slippery, and there are boulders at the base of the crag.

Markfield Quarry

SPA (when belays replaced/improved)

This disused quarry is in the climbing guidebooks and has various areas where climbing is possible, if a little marginal as far as quality climbing is concerned. However, behind the main quarry is a flat grassy area with a miniature crag which is reasonable for groups. It is separated from the potentially dangerous old quarry by a large fence and has a grassy base with stakes for belaying at the top. It is apparently used for abseiling, but a climb or two is possible.

The stakes are of uncertain origin and until they are renewed or backed up it is not recommended that you use them; their condition is not good at present.

Do not use this site until there is some improvement in the belays. In any event, do not enter the fenced quarry area at all.
