Buckinghamshire Longridge Scout Boating Centre, Marlow Bourne End Junior Sports Club, Bourne End
Longridge Scout Boating Centre, Marlow Level 1 Quarry Wood Road, Marlow, Bucks., SL7 1RE. Tel/Fax: 01628 483252 email: admin@longridge.org.uk website: www.longridge.org.uk This is a Scout Association watersports centre on the banks of the Thames with a small climbing/abseiling tower as an extra activity in the grounds, behind the main office building. The tower is in excellent condition and has 3 sides with climbing holds bolted on. It is usually used for climbing and not abseiling as a part of an activity programme; but abseiling is available if requested. At present the centre only has Scout Association 'M' Form qualified staff, and as of 31.10.02 this will not be acceptable to the Guide Association. However, the centre's activity manager is in the process of putting into place the necessary systems to enable his staff to become qualified to Guide Association standards - please check with the centre before going. You will be able to use the Guide Association Level 1 award if teaching your own group. Denham Lane, Chalfont St Peter, Bucks., SL9 0QJ. Tel: 01753 882640 Fax: 01753 884108 email: Warden@chalfont.org website: www.chalfont.org This is a large Scout camp site which has an old brick built climbing wall/abseil tower. The structure is one of the very earliest types of climbing wall, a brick wall with incuts and bricks protruding. It is therefore rather dated (although perfectly useable) as a climbing wall, but abseiling is of course possible down the side. At present the centre only has Scout Association 'M' Form qualified staff, and as of 31.10.02 this will not be acceptable to the Guide Association. You should therefore use Guide Association qualified staff, SPA holders or liase with the warden to find suitably qualified instructors after that date.
Bourne End Junior Sports Club, Bourne End New Road, Bourne End, Bucks., SL8 5BW. Tel: 01628 528110 This sports centre wall is adjacent to Wye Valley School. We have called to try to get information, but not managed to contact anyone yet. When visited the room was locked, but the climbing wall directory lists it as having a 6m high toproping/lead wall made by Entreprises, with a beginners slab and overhanging sections. A notice seemed to indicate that at the moment (Jan 2002) the wall is open to the public on Wednesday evenings.
