Peterborough Town Sports Club and Climbing Wall

LEVEL ONE

General: Situated in Bretton, a suburb of Peterborough, next to the Edith Cavell Hospital. Sign posted only from the hospital turn off.

The climbing wall is part of a sports facility which includes squash courts, cricket pitch, and an astro-turf pitch. The wall is 10 metres in height and has numerous routes at all grades. It is a busy facility and for group use it has to be pre-booked.

Qualifications Required: Minimum of SPA, the guide level one award is not recognised.

Kit and Equipment All ropes for top roping are in-situ. Equipment hire is available.

Instruction: Qualified climbing instructors are available at the centre for hire. Insurance The centre has insurance against failure of the wall and centre supplied equipment. The group will need their own insurance against accident and liability.


 

Mepal Outdoor Centre

LEVEL ONE

General: Situated on the Chatteris Road, Mepal, near Ely, Cambridgeshire. The climbing facility is part of a centre that offers play parks, adventure play zone, water sports, paint balling, archery and many other activities. The climbing facility has three walls, two 6 metre concrete training walls and an 11 metre curved resin lead wall. The grades range from Diff to E4. All the areas are undercover.

Qualifications Required: The Guides level one award is accepted for group instruction. Indeed, the centre runs training courses for the Cambs County Council to train up to the standard required to supervise group climbing sessions. The GA isn't aware of the details of this scheme so far but is looking into it (April 2001).

Contact Details: The contact number for group bookings is: 01354 692 251 Group Bookings: Exclusive use of the wall only without instructor or equipment is mainly on Thursday evenings but some bookings can be accommodated on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. 7.00pm - 10.00pm £45; 7.00pm - 8.30pm or 8.30pm - 10.00pm £30-00. Exclusive use with instructors (and equipment) is from 7.00pm - 8.30pm or 8.30pm - 10.00pm £50-00 (up to six participants) £90-00 (up to twelve).

Any type of belay device is permissible except Figure 8. However, mechanical devices like Gri-gri, Yoyo, SRC are preferred.
